Maximizing Vaccination Reach by Including Dentists and Hygienists (On-Demand)

This session will review the history leading up to and including the Oregon legislative bill that allows the ordering and administration of all vaccines by a dentist. We will also review the process by which hygienists were included in the vaccination efforts at one Federally Qualified Health Center in Oregon. The session will review the training process and advantages of training the dental team to administer vaccines beyond providing additional vaccine bandwidth. The session will include future dental vaccine goals, including flu and HPV vaccines, and how an integrated electronic health record, is vital for this work. Additionally, dental teams closing care gaps in primary care will be explored, with vaccinations as a starting point for this work. We will also discuss billing and coding, nuances between medical and dental insurances that create challenges for the team.
