Numerous environmental surfaces routinely become contaminated with saliva, blood, and exudate during the provision of healthcare. A variety of microbial pathogens are able to survive on these surfaces for extended periods and can cause infection, especially in hospitalized patients. This presentation will initially discuss the most common pathogens involved in these infections. Currently, published guidelines require surface cleaning and disinfection or placement of disposable covers between patients. These will be discussed as effective current practices for healthcare facilities. In addition, a review of new, emerging technologies and practices to improve environmental disinfection will be considered and compared to current.

Speakers:

John Molinari, PhD

Dr. Molinari is Professor Emeritus at the University of Detroit Mercy, where he served for 32 years in the School of Dentistry as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Director of Infection Control. He is a Founder and Past-President of OSAP and has also been Infection Control Director for THE DENTAL ADVISOR in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He has published over 500 scientific articles, text chapters, and abstracts in the areas of microbiology and immunology, and lectures nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and infection control.
