Updates from CDC: This session will provide an overview of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Oral Health’s current programs and activities that support infection prevention and control practices (IPC) in dental settings, including the creation and maintenance of IPC guidance, trainings, and resources. The speakers will also provide an overview of current efforts to update IPC guidance for dental settings and highlight lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speakers:

Gina Thornton-Evans, DDS, MPH

Dr. Gina Thornton-Evans currently serves as the team lead in CDC’s Division of Oral Health, Surveillance, Investigations, and Research team and the Director of CDC’s Dental Public Health Residency program within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, where she leads several key activities focused on monitoring the oral health of the U.S. population and directs a training program for dental public health professionals. She serves as the division’s lead on Healthy People 2020/2030 activities, as the Oral Health Topic Area CDC agency lead, and oversees all efforts related to highlighting the Leading Health Indicator for Oral Health. Her responsibilities include facilitating and coordinating the efforts of the Healthy People 2020/2030 Oral Health Workgroup, including meeting with and obtaining input from the three co-lead agencies—the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), and Indian Health Service (IHS), along with CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) consultants and liaisons. She has represented CDC’s Division of Oral Health on various committees and workgroups related to health disparities, health equity, social determinants of health, periodontitis, diabetes, and maternal and child health. In 2019, Dr. Thornton-Evans received the U.S. Public Health Service Herschel S. Horowitz Oral Health Research and Policy Award for leadership in advancing the surveillance of national measures, specifically those measures related to periodontal disease and in monitoring the performance of national oral health objectives over several decades and leading efforts to improve the oral health of the U.S. population. In 2021, she was appointed as a Santa Fe Group senior scholar.

Casey Hannan, MPH

Mr. Hannan is Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Oral Health. He leads programmatic and scientific efforts, as well as policy, partnerships, and strategic communications strategies to achieve the division’s mission. He is a 34-year post-grad veteran of the public health workforce and has worked in community-based, medical center, university, and government settings throughout his career. He is a proven leader in designing and executing plans to address chronic disease and health promotion topics and has served in leadership positions in four divisions over his 25-year CDC career. Mr. Hannan holds an MPH degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan and was recently named as one of 2021’s 32 Most Influential People in Dentistry by Incisal Edge, a recognition of CDC’s leadership role in dental infection prevention and control.

Larry McGowan

Larry McGowan is a supervisory industrial hygienist for OSHA in the Office of Health Enforcement in the Directorate of Enforcement Programs at OSHA’s National Office in Washington, DC. Larry has a BES in bioengineering from the Johns Hopkins University and a ME in biomedical engineering from the University of Virginia, and he was a certified industrial hygienist (CIH) from 1997-2017 and a certified safety professional (CSP) from 2002 to 2017. Before OSHA, Larry served as a bioengineer with the U.S. Air Force, and then he worked as an industrial hygienist with private consulting firms. Larry joined OSHA in 2004.
