New and emerging pathogens have forced the dental industry to navigate shifting regulations and make changes to their daily operations. Despite efforts by professional organizations and government entities to provide the most current, up-to-date guidance on infection control protocols, a variety of breaches are still occurring creating an unsafe environment, threatening the health of dental team members and their patients, and placing the dental practice at risk. This course will provide participants with a review of current infection prevention guidelines that will assist with mitigating risk, avoiding breaches, and creating a culture of safety in the dental office.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the importance of infection prevention in oral healthcare
2. Name legal entities that enforce clinical standards/laws for dental healthcare providers
3. Identify infection prevention program for the dental office applying the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and OSHA guidelines
4. Identify strategies and resources for the implementation and evaluation of an effective infection prevention program

Dr. Joy D. Void-Holmes is a registered dental hygienist with over 26 years of clinical experience. She holds a Master of Health Science with a concentration in Forensic Investigative Science and Doctor of Health Science degree from Nova Southeastern University. She is founder of Dr. Joy, RDH™ and co-founder of JELL-ED. Dr. Joy has presented continuing education courses nationally and internationally. She serves as a Consultant Examiner for the CDCA-WREB-CITA examining board, board member for the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners and is on the editorial advisory board for Inside Dental Hygiene, clinical advisory board for vTail, and advisory board for RDH magazine. Dr. Joy is an active member of the American Academy of Dental Hygiene, American Dental Hygienists’ Association, and the Maryland Dental Action Coalition.
