This course explores sharps injuries beyond those caused by needle sticks and associated bloodborne pathogens. Various dental instruments also pose injury risks and expose wounds to infection by pathogens on the skin or in the environment. A compelling workplace scenario reveals the consequences of not following immediate and appropriate post-exposure management.

Outlined is a sample protocol for post-exposure management. Separate charts highlight how common bloodborne and cutaneous pathogens may infect wounds. Training tools include a discussion guide, photo quiz, video quiz, and critical takeaways to prevent sharps injuries when handling instruments in cassettes for reprocessing. Cited are updates and references to trusted resources. 

Learning Objectives: 

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

1. Discuss strategies to prevent sharps injuries when handling instruments in cassettes for reprocessing.
2. Review how and when to follow post-exposure prophylaxis rules.
3. Identify representative pathogens that may be transmitted by percutaneous and permucosal routes.
