It is very easy to work in the dental arena and lose sight of infection control risks because we may see them every day and they have become the norm. This session will use pictures related to disinfection and sterilization to identify key concepts and issues that impact staff and patient safety and implementation of safe disinfection and sterilization processes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Identify situations that could place staff or patients at risk of bloodborne pathogens exposure
2. Recognize situations that should result in reprocessing of an unused sterilized instrument
3. Describe situations that may be resulting in damage to instruments

Sylvia Garcia-Houchins is the Director of Infection Prevention and Control and an Ambulatory Surveyor for The Joint Commission. In that role, she oversees application and interpretation of infection control related standards. With over 30 years of experience, Sylvia has also authored numerous articles and book chapters related to infection control including the Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization Chapter in the most recent edition of the The APIC/JCR Infection Prevention and Control Workbook.
