This presentation will describe two recent disease outbreaks associated with water used for dental treatment in pediatric dental practices, and it will explain the role of biofilm and dental unit design in these events.  Current technologies and guidance for selecting products and techniques to improve dental water quality will be described.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Recognize the potential health risks associated with dental waterline biofilms
2. Describe how the design of dental units results in high levels of bacterial contamination in water used for dental treatment
3. List practical steps to manage and monitor the quality of water used in dental practices to ensure the safety of patients and staff members as described in the Dental Unit Water Quality: Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention White Paper and Recommendations- 2018

Dr. Mills is an independent consultant, lecturer, and author and is internationally recognized as an expert in infection control and prevention. He has been a member of OSAP since 1991 and is a recipient of the OSAP James J. Crawford Award for Lifetime Achievement. He has served for many years as a volunteer member of the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association Standards Committees for Dental Products (ADA SCDP) and Informatics (ADA SCDI) and is currently the institutional voting representative for OSAP on both committees.
