Dental personnel and patients are at risk of ocular exposure to pathogens and/or physical or chemical injury Ocular injuries and infections may lead to serious long-term consequences including potential blindness. Eye protection by dental team members (and patients) is often suboptimal or lacking. This session will review best practices and relevant safety standards for eye protection during all phases of oral healthcare including instrument reprocessing, cleaning and disinfection of environmental surfaces, chairside dentistry, and light-curing procedures for dental personnel and patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Describe eye protection for dental healthcare personnel and patients during all phases of the delivery of oral healthcare
2. Describe the importance of filtered safety eyewear for both patients and clinicians
3. Describe and identify updated NIOSH, OSHA, and CDC recommendations to reduce eye injury and protect against ocular infection exposures.
4. Discuss the importance of continuous eye protection education/awareness of ocular risks for all employees and patients

Speakers:

Karen Daw, MBA, CECM, CDIPC

Ms. Daw is an award-winning national speaker, author of numerous articles and CE courses on safety in dentistry, and a consultant to practices across the country. She earned her BA from Ohio State University and her MBA with concentrations in Healthcare Administration and Business Management. After graduating, Ms. Daw was recruited from the Emergency Department to her roles as Assistant Director of Sterilization Monitoring and Health and Safety Director for the OSU College of Dentistry. A former event co-chair and proud member of OSAP, Karen draws on her rich background to educate audiences large and small on building a culture of safety. Ms. Daw has also earned her Certified in Dental Infection Prevention and Control (CDIPC) certification.

Marie T. Fluent, DDS, CDIPC

Dr. Fluent is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Her dental career spans 35 years and includes roles as dentist, both as an associate and practice owner, infection control coordinator, office manager, and dental assistant. Additionally, she has extensive experience and expertise as a dental inflection control clinical instructor, educator, speaker, author, and consultant. Dr. Fluent is passionate and deeply committed to improving dental infection control and patient safety. Through her writing, webinars, and invited lectures, she has educated thousands of dental professionals and students nationally and internationally. Dr. Fluent has written numerous peer-reviewed articles on infection control in the dental setting, OSHA compliance, and responsible antibiotic prescribing. She has also earned the CDIPC certification.
