Package Description

The session will discuss literature that has come out since the pandemic that has investigated the biological sources of the bioaerosols in dental clinics (patient vs dental personnel, nose vs saliva), aerosol particle sizes, and their properties in relation to penetration into the respiratory system, and methods to mitigate these particles. The session will discuss both previously published literature from a multidisciplinary group in the University of Alberta that has studied these questions, as well as the result of the next phase of studies that has examined the effectiveness of medical masks, and the use of mouthwashes and antimicrobial nasal swabs to modify the microbiota and reduce the biomass.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify the biological sources of the bioaerosols in dental clinics.
2. Describe which dental procedures emit more particles and bioaerosols.
3. Describe the strength of different aerosol mitigation strategies (HVE, combinations of
suction, addition of Local Exhaust Ventilation) in capturing the bioaerosols emitted during dental procedures.
