Package Description

In 2016, the CDC published a Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings, Basic Expectations for Safe Care, which formalized the recommendation for every dental practice to have an infection control coordinator (ICC). Seven years later, compliance with this recommendation still appears to be low. This session will explore how to prepare the next generation of ICCs. A discussion of reasons for lack of compliance with the ICC recommendation, strategies that educators can utilize in dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting curricula to improve knowledge about the importance of designating an ICC, and strategies that consultants can utilize in educating and training dental staff. Resources and curricula that are currently available, the development of future resources, as well as the need for standardization of training methods and materials will be discussed. In small groups, participants will develop suggestions for improving educational methods and materials and will create an action plan with two key takeaway strategies they will implement in their setting.
