Dentistry has struggled to find and keep team members, and the infection prevention protocols do not have to take a hit during these challenging times. The need for clear, concise standard operating procedures has never been more apparent in an industry where a staff shortage could mean increased infection control breaches. Creating SOPs can feel tedious, and when you are already short-staffed, it may feel like they will never get done. So let's start them together! In this Experiential Learning session, together, we will create your standard operating procedures, starting with your protocols for dental unit waterlines and suction line maintenance. If you struggle to get started, let's use the energy in the room and collaborate to kickstart your SOP database.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify infection control practices that need standard operating procedures Understand the minimum standards for dental unit waterlines and create an SOP for DUWL protocol
2. Understand the recommended protocols for suction line maintenance and create an SOP for this task
3. Discuss how a safety culture and SOPs create safe dental visits

Michelle Strange, MSDH, RDH, has more than two decades of dental expertise, beginning as a dental assistant and completing a bachelor’s degree in health science from the Medical University of South Carolina and a master’s in dental hygiene education from the University of Bridgeport. She continues to invest in ongoing education, gaining certifications such as her Certificate in Dental Infection Prevention and Control. Her community and global endeavors demonstrate her passion for dentistry, from volunteer work to worldwide missions. She is the owner of Level Up Infection Prevention, MichelleStrangeRDH, a practicing dental hygienist, and was the co-founder of A Tale of Two Hygienists podcast.
