Package Description

The World Alliance for Patient Safety launched by the WHO advocates for patient safety and patient safety training for health sciences education and training programs. According to Paget (2004), clinical work is an error-ridden activity. Many patient safety incidents are related to a lack of attention to human factors and ergonomics (HFE) in the design and implementation of technologies, processes, workflows, jobs, and teams. The premise of HFE-based principles is to improve patient safety along with the well-being of the patient and the clinician. This presentation will review HFE approaches and contributions that produce patient safety benefits in the oral health care setting.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Define Human Factors and Ergonomics
2. Explain three major domains of HFE: physical ergonomics, cognitive ergonomics, and organizational ergonomics
3. Discuss safety culture and human error in healthcare
4. Examine human factors and ergonomics in patient safety management and infection prevention
