A lecture presentation focusing on the safe use of opioids and other controlled substances commonly prescribed in dental practice.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Understand the current magnitude and causes of the national crisis of overdose deaths
2. Recognize the role of the Dentist in safe prescribing for the relief of pain, risk stratification, interdisciplinary care, and evidence-based practice management of the at-risk patient
3. Review tools for assessing patient risk, including brief validated screeners and state prescription drug monitoring program databases
4. Recognize patient risk factors for misuse of controlled substances and risks for the presence of a substance use disorder
5. Identify strategies for improved Interprofessional care of complex patients with active substance use disorder

Speakers:

Richard Harold, DMD, JD

Dr. Harold is an adjunct Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. Dr. Harold received his DMD degree from Tufts University, his JD from New England School of Law and his BS in pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy. Dr. Harold has a specific interest in dental-legal issues and has lectured locally and nationally. He has published several articles regarding risk management, the prescription opioid epidemic, management of acute dental pain and ethical and legal guidelines for prescription writing. Dr. Harold served as a consultant to the American Dental Association Council on Dental Practice during 2018-19 and participated in an initiative to develop a comprehensive resource on dental practice risk management. The work product of the initiative serves as the basis for the ADA Guidelines for Practice Success module on Managing Risk.

Ronald J Kulich, PhD

Dr.  Kulich is a Full Professor and clinical psychologist at the Dept of Diagnostic Sciences at Tufts School of Dental Medicine and holds an additional appointment at Harvard-MGH, Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine. He has published multiple peer-reviewed papers and three books on pain assessment and management, with recent work as a director of the Interprofessional Pain and Headache Rounds, an international educational platform reaching clinicians, scientists, and public policy stakeholders.   His recent research and grant funding focuses on controlled substance risk mitigation, and improving pain care access.
