Package Description

As drug-resistant bacteria are a growing threat to public health, dentists rank among the top prescribers of antibiotics among health care professionals. It has been reported that patients who report a penicillin allergy are at increased risk of developing drug-resistant infections and adverse reactions, including Clostridioides difficile infection. Although 10% of patients report a penicillin allergy, 90% do NOT have a true allergy that precludes the prescribing of penicillin. Therefore, the CDC encourages all healthcare professionals to confirm penicillin allergies, with an emphasis on “de-labeling” patients that do not have true penicillin allergies if appropriate. The dental office offers a unique opportunity to identify patients who may be candidates for penicillin allergy de-labeling. Attendees will learn how to use chairside tools to support this antibiotic stewardship practice in the clinical setting.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Discuss adverse reactions associated with antibiotic use.
2. Describe the process, evidence, and clinical impact of reviewing the drug history and previous reactions with the patient.
3. Identify how to implement chairside tools to support patients reporting penicillin allergies in your dental practice.
4. Discuss when to refer the patient for penicillin allergy skin testing, and practice communication with an interprofessional healthcare team.
