Package Description

SARS-CoV-2 had a significant impact on the practice of dentistry as has many other infectious diseases. This session will cover other new infectious diseases that can impact dentistry as new infectious diseases are on the rise in our global community. A new study shows that since 1940, scientists have identified 335 emerging infectious diseases in people. Those diseases include severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Ebola, HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), West Nile virus, and methicillin-resistant staph (MRSA). Untreated dental unit waterlines (DUWL) are also an issue of concern. Disease-causing microorganisms found in untreated DUWL include Legionella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and nontuberculous Mycobacteria.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Describe new infectious diseases that are a threat to society and the practice of dentistry.
2. Outline the steps to take to prevent transmission of new pathogens in the dental setting.
3. Recite evidence-based resources that will assist during outbreaks of infectious diseases
