Updates from CDC: This session will provide an overview of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Division of Oral Health’s current programs and activities that support infection prevention and control practices (IPC) in dental settings, including the creation and maintenance of IPC guidance, trainings, and resources. The speakers will also provide an overview of current efforts to update IPC guidance for dental settings and highlight lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Provide an overview of how the Division of Oral Health supports IPC activities in dental settings.
  2. Describe how CDC creates guidance and provide a summary of current efforts to update IPC guidance.
  3. Discuss lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Updates from OSHA: Overview of OSHA’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic to continued outbreaks and fatalities from COVID-19 in America's workplaces.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  1. Advance the level of knowledge for dental practitioners with respect to following CDC guidance and OSHA’s requirements for worker health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  2. Overview OSHA’s enforcement activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instructors

Casey Hannan, MPH

Mr. Hannan is Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Oral Health. He leads programmatic and scientific efforts, as well as policy, partnerships, and strategic communications strategies to achieve the division’s mission. He is a 34-year post-grad veteran of the public health workforce and has worked in community-based, medical centers, university, and government settings throughout his career. He is a proven leader in designing and executing plans to address chronic disease and health promotion topics and has served in leadership positions in four divisions over his 25-year CDC career. Mr. Hannan holds an MPH degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan and was recently named as one of 2021’s 32 Most Influential People in Dentistry by Incisal Edge, a recognition of CDC’s leadership role in dental infection prevention and control.

Gina Thornton-Evans, DDS, MPH

Dr. Gina Thornton-Evans is the Director, Dental Public Health Residency Program, and the Team Lead, Surveillance, Investigations, and Research Team for the CDC Division of Oral Health.

Larry McGowan

Larry McGowan is a supervisory industrial hygienist for OSHA in the Office of Health Enforcement in the
Directorate of Enforcement Programs at OSHA’s National Office in Washington, DC. Larry has a bachelor’s
degree in bioengineering from Johns Hopkins University and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering
from the University of Virginia, and he was formerly a Certified Industrial Hygienist for 15 years and a Certified
Safety Professional for 10 years. Larry’s professional career began as a bioenvironmental engineer on active
duty with the U.S. Air Force for 18 years. After retiring from the Air Force, Larry worked for eight years with
consulting firms in industrial hygiene and environmental engineering. Larry joined OSHA as an industrial
hygienist in 2004.
