This session will review the history leading up to and including the Oregon legislative bill that allows the ordering and administration of all vaccines by a dentist. We will also review the process by which hygienists were included in the vaccination efforts at one Federally Qualified Health Center in Oregon. The session will review the training process and advantages of training the dental team to administer vaccines beyond providing additional vaccine bandwidth. The session will include future dental vaccine goals, including flu and HPV vaccines, and how an integrated electronic health record, is vital for this work. Additionally, dental teams closing care gaps in primary care will be explored, with vaccinations as a starting point for this work. We will also discuss billing and coding, nuances between medical and dental insurances that create challenges for the team.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • extrapolate useful information to inform dental vaccine policy in states where dental professionals are not able to vaccinate currently.
  • recognize the value in training the dental team to administer vaccines: extending the reach of primary care and pharmacy with administration of vaccines, increase in staff satisfaction, increase in integration due to working closely with primary care and pharmacy colleagues.
  • identify key components needed for dental providers to be trained to give vaccines and recognize key advantages of having dental team members providing vaccines.

Lisa Bozzetti, DDS

Dr. Bozzetti is Dental Director at Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center (VGMHC) where she fostered growth of the dental program over the past 14 years. The program now includes 6 dental clinics, a school based sealant program, dental hygiene services integrated into primary care and mobile outreach. She maintains a clinical faculty position at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU), serves on the Board of Directors for NNOHA and is passionate about integrated health care services in addition to being a voice for the importance of oral health in Oregon and beyond.
