Update on ANSI, ADA, AAMI, and ISO Standards (On-Demand)

This presentation will describe how voluntary consensus standards help assure the quality and safety of dental products and how these industrial standards enhance the competitiveness of US products in the global marketplace.  Participants will learn how to access and apply current national and international standards related to infection prevention and safety. Dr. Collins and Dr. Mills will review current ANSI/ADA and AAMI initiatives and describe how OSAP members can participate in standards development activities.

Learning Objectives:

  2. Identify how to access and use standards related to infection prevention and safety and describe how to participate in standards development.
  3. Articulate OSAP's current participation in ADA, AAMI, and ISO voluntary consensus standards development activities.

Instructors

Fiona Collins, BDS, MBA, MA

Dr. Collins has given presentations throughout North America and in Europe, the Pacific Rim, and the Middle East. She has educated dental professionals and students through interactive live presentations, webinars, and continuing education articles. Dr. Collins has also worked with organizations to deliver practical information that enhances patient care and safety, including the delivery of Stakeholder content for OSAP for the Safest Dental Visit. Dr. Collins is the American Dental Association representative to the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI); a member of the American Dental Association, Chicago Dental Society, and OSAP; a participant in standards working groups; and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Shannon E. Mills, DDS

Dr. Mills is retired Air Force Dental Officer, dental educator, and dental benefits executive.  He is currently an independent consultant, lecturer, and author and is internationally recognized as an expert in infection prevention and control. He has been a member of OSAP since 1991 and is a recipient of the OSAP James J. Crawford Award for Lifetime Achievement. He represents OSAP as a volunteer member of the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association Standards Committees.   He is currently a contract subject matter expert for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Oral Health.
