Overview of National Prescribing Guidelines (On-Demand)

Antibiotics are prescribed in oral healthcare for two principal indications: For the treatment of oral infections and prevention of infections, yet 30-85% of dental antibiotic prescriptions are suboptimal or not indicated. This session will discuss the recently published ADA prescribing guidelines for the treatment of oral infections and indications for antibiotic prophylaxis. Participants will learn national prescribing guidelines and best practices to ensure responsible prescribing practices in their dental setting. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Discuss the American Dental Association (ADA) Guidelines for the treatment of oral infections with patients for tooth pain and swelling.  
  2. Review American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of bacterial endocarditis. 
  3. Review American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis for the prevention of prosthetic joint infection.
