Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) & Hand Hygiene (On-Demand)

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is wearable equipment designed to protect DHCP from exposure to or contact with infectious agents. This presentation will provide an overview of best practices and supplies for personal protective equipment and discuss practical implementation issues. A clip from OSAP’s If Saliva Were Red video will also be shown, highlighting common dental infection control and safety flaws the cross-contamination DHCP would see if saliva were red.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Define the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to reduce the risk of exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. 
  2. Explain the rationale for compliance with PPE standards, regulations, guidelines, and best practices.
  3. List two breaches in infection prevention as viewed in the If Saliva Were Red video. 
  4. Describe the appropriate steps for handwashing and the use of alcohol handrubs.
