Sharps Safety (On-Demand)

In response to widespread concern regarding the continued exposure of healthcare workers to infectious diseases due to sharps injuries, the 106th Congress passed Public Law 106-430, the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act. This expanded the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Rule to include the mandate for employers to provide safety devices intended to prevent sharps injuries among healthcare workers. The presentation will review the requirements under the Act and provide examples of sharps safety devices available to dental professionals. The speaker will also discuss methods of evaluating devices.

  1. Discuss measures to reduce the risk of a sharps injury.
  2. Describe the features of and the evaluation process for selecting devices with engineered sharps injury protection (ESIP) devices.
