Surveillance and Breaches in Infection Control in Dentistry (On-Demand)

This presentation will describe the role of surveillance in reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and other adverse events and the role of providers, public health officials, and state agencies in responding to breaches and outbreaks in healthcare settings. The speakers will describe the types of breaches that occur in all healthcare settings, including defective system or process design, a system breakdown, equipment failure, or human error.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Describe the purpose of healthcare surveillance to identify and manage adverse events including staff compliance healthcare-associated infections (HAI) and infection control breaches 
  2. Identify reasons why we may be underestimating the number of transmissions in dental health care settings Identify resources available for conducting outbreak investigations 
  3. Describe the types of infection control breaches and other adverse events that may occur in dental settings 
  4. Identify a systematic process for investigating and reporting sterilization breaches, including the use of Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycles
